As a brother of an emerging and aspiring firefighter who volunteers at Station 20 in Upper Marlboro, I am proud to say that a Prince George's County firefighter was recognized with a very special honor. She's been named National Firefighter of the Year!
Sara Shaffer, who first started volunteering when she was 18, is the first woman from Prince George's County to get the award, which is given by the American Legion Veterans' Organization.
This is a great honor for her, her family and friends, and our county. The work that our first responders do and the dedication that they give to the citizens of this great county is unmatched.
Congratulations to Ms. Shaffer; keep up the good work!
